It’s a crummy day in the neighborhood…

Well, the temps went from 70 to 40 yesterday (in about an hour) and have stayed there with the introduction of fog and drizzle. Thought I heard some hail last night, but I’m not sure (didn’t get up to check!)
We here in Texas ARE NOT used to cruddy weather, so everyone seems to be a little sadder when it’s yucky. Of course you have the few people who are SO happy because “we need the rain”, but mostly we’re all kinda dumpy and grumpy and ready to go play outdoors again (esp. those in Austin… not that I’m one of them, but STILL!) 🙂

At this juncture I find myself bummed, cold, with no energy. Any ideas for a pick-me-up?

FAVE

I have a new favorite article of clothing… these SHOES! heels
Seriously, RUN, don’t walk, to JCPenney and pick them up. They’re on sale, super comfortable, and so vintage chic. LOVE them… had to pass it along. 🙂

Andrea’s First Call

Andrea had her first call last night from a school friend! Not that she hasn’t talked on the phone to her friends before, but it’s always been after we parents talked, etc. This time the little girl called for Andrea specifically. You should’ve seen her face beaming as they talked – shyly, since Andrea wasn’t sure what to say/talk about, but it was so magical to watch.

Andrea’s had a hard time adjusting to her new school, and has had a hard time finding close friends. 3rd grade seems to be the year of cliques starting (they didn’t do that until middle school in my days!) and vicious personal attacks… everything from how you dress, speak, act, or even just what you love. It’s not enough that most the kids her age love Hannah Montana… the ones that don’t aren’t content unless they’re making fun of her and those who like her relentlessly.

I know this is normal for childhood, although it’s a lot rougher than I remember. It’s been a rough year, so I was so excited for the call last night! I couldn’t stop smiling and almost burst into tears!! LOL I should’ve snapped a photo to scrap, but I was in the middle of cooking eggs, so that probably wouldn’t have been good! 🙂 It was a short conversation, homework to do and all, but it was literally one of my happiest moments of this year.

A play date was set for Saturday, and her mom’s number is in my phone. Thank God for little blessings of kindness and friendship.

Word Play

On my daily visit over to http://inkonmyfingers.typepad.com/ink_on_my_fingers/ I joined this fabulous word exercise. My letter and response are in the comments over there, but I thought I’d post them here too:

My letter was “C” (thanks Susannah!)

chrysanthemum – I just love saying this word and feeling my lips go numb by the end!

conundrum – another fun one to say

conquest – visions of great fleets of ships on the horizon… not great for the one’s being conqurered, but a great mental picture in the meantime

concure – a fabulously delicious word we should say much more often

chagrin – even SAYING the word makes me grin! And thinking a handsome man being chagrined makes me grin even more!

cogent – although I always pronounce this incorrectly, I still use it all the time

court – as in “to court a lady”. You notice the word “court” just can’t be uttered in the sentance “why don’t you court a skank?” That should say something about society, I think.

That’s 7… hmm…

COFFEE – my nectar of life!! Happiness can be found in a cup of coffee. Especially if you’re still sitting in the coffee shoppe!

companion – soothing…
comforting – word. 🙂 I love the word comforting, just makes me think of a motherly hug (either with my daughter or mother), a warm quilt, more coffee.

computer – couldn’t live without it. I think I could get used to not having the internet (lol… maybe) but to not have typing, games, Photoshop… it’d just be over.

Ok, there’s my 10! 🙂

I would REALLY encourage you to go bookmark Susannah’s blog – it’s fabulous and such an inspiration each day.

Introspection

I figured out something last night… something that permiates through everything I do (for good and bad):

I don’t take myself too seriously.

Now, half the people who know me would say I’m way too serious in disposition (which is true) and the other half would say I’m  not serious enough (also true). But what it comes down to is that I don’t take myself too seriously.

I’ll be the first to make fun of myself, or admit that I don’t know something (and that it’s ok that I don’t). As a kid (and sometimes now!) if somebody called me a “chicken” I’d literally look them in the eye and reply “BAUCK!!” That threw the teasing bunch for a loop.

That’s not to say that I’m not hard on myself. I never forgive myself for something I’ve done/said wrong. I’m sometimes tormented by past mistakes or missteps. But in the end, I try to look at myself in the most honest light:

I’m not perfect. Never will be. I will try my best, and work hard, but if that doesn’t work out, oh well. God loves me, as I am. Imperfect. Clutsy. Goofy. Serious. Happy or depressed. And nothing anybody says or does can change that. I will try and succeed sometimes, and I will try and fail just as many times. But who doesn’t??

My thought for today… don’t take yourself too seriously. If you screw up, OK!! If you succeed, GREAT!! If everybody looks at you like you’re weird, it’s because YOU ARE! We ALL are weird in some way or another!! Enjoy laughing at yourself, enjoy working hard, but mostly just enjoy being yourself. God loves you that way. 😉

Green Apple Contest

SOUR APPLE Keep Calm and Carry On 16 x 20

I am in love with a new color: green apple! Don’t know where it came from, but I LOVE it! I’m especially loving the new apple green harringbone patterns I’m seeing. So, in honor of my new favorite, I’m having a little contest…

Post a comment with a link to a fabulous green apple-colored item on Etsy by Monday, Feb. 23 at 5 pm CST and I will randomly pick one responder to receive a $10 credit toward anything in my Etsy store (which I added a bunch more stuff to tonight! :)) Items can be anything with the color green apple in them listed for sale now on Etsy.

So get to searching!! Good luck and I’ll announce the winner on Monday night!
